The HKUST VisLab<http://vis.cse.ust.hk/> led by Prof. Huamin Qu<http://www.huamin.org/> at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is seeking highly motivated and talented researchers and developers to join the research team. The following are the highlighted research directions and projects in VisLab.

About our research group:  
The HKUST Visualization Lab (HKUST VisLab, lab homepage: <http://vis.cse.ust.hk/> http://vis.cse.ust.hk/), established by Professor Huamin Qu in 2004, is recognized as one of the most prolific visualization research teams worldwide. We conduct cutting-edge research in data visualization, human-computer interaction (HCI), and augmented and virtual reality (AR&VR) to enhance data exploration and analysis across various applications, including e-learning, digital twins, and data storytelling.

About the research direction/project
E-Learning<http://vis.cse.ust.hk/groups/e-learning/> is to create an engaging and transformative learning experience that will redefine education. By harnessing technologies like AI, data visualization, and XR, we are on a mission to revolutionize how students learn and engage in the future. The current project is dedicated to creating an immersive English learning environment for secondary school students through the innovative use of virtual reality technology and artificial intelligence. As one of the team members, you'll have the exciting opportunity to develop an interactive platform where learners can engage in real-time with AI tutors, practice speaking in simulated real-life scenarios, and receive personalized guidance and feedback tailored to their needs.

Position Description and Requirements
We provide multiple vacancies for research assistants and full-time developers. The responsibilities and requirements for each position are listed as follows.


Qualifications:

  *
work full-time (must have graduated or will graduate before the contract starts);
  *
must have a strong interest and enthusiasm for  the E-Learning E- above research areas.


The full-time research assistants and developers will be expected to work on the E-learning project, focusing on the specified tasks outlined below.
Web Frontend Development 
Responsibility:

  *
Designing, developing, and optimizing user interfaces to create a smooth user experience.
  *
Working closely with backend developers to ensure outstanding website performance.

Requirements:

  *
Have a bachelor’s degree or above in computer science or related fields.
  *
Are proficient in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, with TypeScript experience preferred.
  *
Are familiar with React or Vue frameworks, and have knowledge of D3.js, Three.js, and anime.js.
  *
Have a good coding style and documentation habits.
  *
Have good communication and team-working skills.
  *
Preferably have experience interning at a large company.


VR Development 
Responsibility:

  *
Designing and developing immersive VR experiences and applications.
  *
Optimizing VR performance and user interaction.
  *
Collaborating with the team to bring creative concepts to reality.

Requirements:

  *
Have a bachelor degree or above in computer science or related fields.
  *
Are proficient in C#/C++, with experience in Unity or Unreal Engine development.
  *
Have experience in Gameplay, online networking, and Unity plugin development.
  *
Understand 3D asset management and are familiar with resource import/export processes.
  *
Possess innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  *
Have good communication and team-working skills.


Web Full Stack Development 
Responsibility:

  *
Designing and developing efficient, scalable frontend and backend systems.
  *
Optimizing website performance and user experience.
  *
Participating in database design and optimization, with familiarity in PostgreSQL preferred.
  *
Collaborating with the team through the entire product lifecycle from concept to launch.

Requirements:

  *
Have a bachelor’s degree or above in computer science or related fields.
  *
Are proficient in React and Vue frontend frameworks, with knowledge of Webpack, D3.js, and Three.js.
  *
Are familiar with server frameworks like RubyRails, Python Flask, Node.js, etc.
  *
Have solid SQL database skills.
  *
Preferably have experience with at least one deep learning framework.
  *
Have experience in developing large model systems, and familiarity with LangChain.
  *
Possess strong problem-solving abilities and a passion for continuous learning.
  *
Have good communication and team-working skills


Contract Duration:
1-year contract (renewable based on performance after contract expiration).

Salary:

  *
Entry-level RA/developer: 18K - 25K HKD/month
  *
Experienced developer: 25K - 40K HKD/month

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
