TEASYS – NEWS[1]
 
Have you ever wondered about the historical context of bell-ringing  
that informs the subtitle of Charles Dickens’s /The Chimes – A Goblin  
Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In/? Find  
out how our students explain the tradition and its impact on the /The  
Chimes/ in their annotations[2].
 
Remember to register for the focus module “HOW TO DO THINGS WITH  
CORPORA” that will be taught by Prof. Dr. Angelika Zirker at the  
University of Tübingen (eligible also for the DH special profile) to  
learn about different approaches to corpora and to get involved  
practically in conducting close and distant readings digitally as well  
as compiling collections of texts. The course will take place on  
MONDAYS FROM 10-12 C.T., STARTING APRIL 24, 2023.

The Annotated Web Edition Directory[3] is looking forward to your  
suggestions. We are always on the look-out for new entries to add to  
the list. Feel free to recommend literary digital editions that  
include explanatory annotation (of the social or the editorial kind),  
web platforms, tools and applications that enable the user to  
(collaboratively) annotate texts. Please use the corresponding form on

CALLS FOR PAPERS
 
You may want to contribute to the FORGE CONFERENCE (Forschungsdaten in  
den Geisteswissenschaften) that will be hosted on site at the  
University of Tübingen (DH Centre and DAASI International) from  
October 4-6, 2023, with the title “Anything goes?! Forschungsdaten in  
den Geisteswissenschaften - kritisch betrachtet.” There are three  
possibilities of contribution: proposal for a workshop, proposal for a  
talk and proposal for a poster. Topic suggestions as well as  
requirements are online here[4]. You can submit your ABSTRACTS UNTIL  
APRIL 28, 2023.
 
The ACL Special Interest Group for Annotation (SIGANN) is inviting  
papers for the 17TH LINGUISTIC ANNOTATION WORKSHOP (LAW XVII) on July  
13, 2023, in Toronto. Papers may cover aspects of ethics related to  
annotation, crowd-sourcing, and beyond, since the special theme of the  
workshop is “Ethics and Annotation”. SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS APRIL 7,  
2023. Find further information in the call for papers online[5].
 
For the hybrid from CLARIN CONFERENCE 2023 (taking place in the  
historic city of Leuven, Belgium, at the heritage campus of the Irish  
College, but also fully accessible online), a call for papers has been  
issued on the use of the CLARIN infrastructure, i.e. usability,  
evaluations, user identification, relevant research projects, and  
teaching and learning cases using CLARIN resources and services. You  
can find information on the conference and paper requirements  
online[6]. SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS IS APRIL 14, 2023.
 
The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at the Bielefeld  
University is pleased to announce their call for papers for their  
INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE “NAVIGATING UNCERTAINTY: Preparing  
Society for the Future” which will take place from June 5-7, 2023.  
Submissions on, for instance, measuring and identifying uncertainty in  
societies, its effect on individual and collective beliefs and  
actions, and beyond, will be accepted UNTIL MARCH 15, 2023. For more  
information see here[7].
 
You can now submit contributions to the online Papyri Conference  
“PERCEPTIONS OF WRITING IN PAPYRI. CROSSING CLOSE AND DISTANT  
READINGS” from December 7-8, 2023. The conference will analyse how  
digital culture has changed the perceptions of writing styles in  
papyri. The deadline for submitting your papers is APRIL 30, 2023.

JOBS AND GRANTS
 
The department Transfer of Education at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität  
Freiburg is hiring A COORDINATOR IT FOR THE PROJECT  
“HOCHSCHULWEITERBILDUNG at BW”. The position is part-time (60-80%) and to  
be filled earliest possible. As coordinator IT, you are responsible  
for the coordination, communication, and controlling of IT-projects  
within the context of the development of platforms, and deal with  
order management of external service companies. What is more, you are  
directly involved in decision making and the development, controlling  
and implementation of educational trainings. You can consult the job

The Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek (ULB) at the Technische  
Universität Darmstadt is currently hiring a full-time PROJECT  
ASSISTANT for 2 years with the goal of digitalising one of the oldest  
newspapers, the Darmstädter Tagblatt. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MARCH  
12, 2023. For more information, requirements, and formalities, please  
see here[9].
 
A free 2,5-year position as RESEARCH ASSISTANT (TV-L 13) is waiting to  
be filled in the cluster of excellence EXC 2020 “Temporal Communities:  
Doing Literature in a Global Perspective” at the Freie Universität  
Berlin. The position offers the opportunity to conduct your own  
research project revolving around the Research Area (RA) 5, “BUILDING  
DIGITAL COMMUNITIES”, which intends to link the individual research  
fields closer to one another. Requirements are a master’s degree or an  
equal degree in a subject pertaining to literary studies or cultural

If you are interested in scientific research in the context of Open  
Access and would like to come up with technical solutions for  
intriguing research, you might want to have a look at the full-time

SUMMER SCHOOLS, WORKSHOPS, AND CERTIFICATES
 
The TH Köln is offering a unique course on RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT  
with the aim of awarding a CERTIFICATE. The course takes place over  
the course of 10 months (extra occupational) starting on September 1,  
2023. The course is aimed at employees from science-related  
infrastructures and research. Find more information on their  
website[12] and APPLY UNTIL MAY 2, 2023.
 
In the context of their long-term project Formulae – Litterae –  
Chartae, the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg is offering a SUMMER  
SCHOOL ON DIGITAL ECDOTIC from July 11-14, 2023. The main focus of the  
summer school lies on digital tools and techniques for editing  
historical texts and documents and gives a chance to learn about the  
theory of editing as well as practical implementation. Find out more  
about the summer school in Hamburg here[13].  APPLICATION DEADLINE IS  
APRIL 21, 2023.
 
You can now register for the NFDI-Konsortium Text+ is organising a  
workshop titled “WOHIN DAMIT? STORING AND REUSING MY LANGUAGE DATA” ON  
JUNE 22, 2023, at the IDS Mannheim. The workshop serves to inform  
about how and where data can be stored and get into contact with data-  
and competence centres of the Text+-Datendomäne Sammlungen.
 
Hosted by the ACL Special Interest Group on Annotation (SIGANN), the  
17th LINGUISTIC ANNOTATION WORKSHOP will take place on July 13, 2023,  
together with ACL 2023 in Toronto. The workshop provides a forum for  
the presentation and discussion of innovative research on all aspects  
of linguistic annotation, including the creation and evaluation of  
annotation schemes, methods for automatic and manual annotation, use  
and evaluation of annotation software and frameworks, representation  
of linguistic data and annotations, semi-supervised “human in the  
loop” methods of annotation, crowd-sourcing approaches, and more. Find  
the invited keynote speakers here[14] and mind the call for papers  
enlisted in this newsletter.
