Seeking a postdoctoral candidate interested in applying visualization to guide the development of bioinformatic models.

Are you interested in cutting-edge interactive data visualization and data analysis, have strong programming skills, and a desire to make a real impact in both basic science and medical care?

We are seeking a postdoctoral candidate to fill a position on a newly funded NIH project aimed at developing visual tools for understanding molecular/biomarker signatures of preeclampsia, a significant disorder of pregnancy. Current diagnosis and treatment for preeclampsia is entirely driven by gross clinical symptoms, with an unfortunately high rate of suboptimal outcomes. Far more information about the actual state of a preeclamptic pregnancy is available in proteomic and other biomarker signatures, yet there are currently no models or tools available to use these data for diagnosis and treatment planning.

The postdoctoral researcher will be directly and deeply involved in implementing a new model of preeclampsia based on data-derived networks of interacting proteomic signatures, and developing a tool that enables clinicians to place their patient in the model and accurately categorize their clinical phenotype at a molecular level. Our current preliminary models and analysis tools are visual-analytic/exploratory-visualization approaches, based in Linear Discriminant Analysis and Conditional Random Fields, and the postdoctoral researcher will be directly responsible for extending these tools and improving both the visualizations and the underlying analytic framework.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science/Visualization/Visual Analytics, Computational Biology/Bioinformatics, or similar relevant domains with strong computational components. Experience with OpenGL programming in Python (our current implementation is in Python) or C/C++ is highly desirable, as is proficiency in working and programming in a heterogenous Unix environment. Experience with Perl, relational or object-oriented databases, and graphical probabilistic models will be a plus.
