UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
Geographic Information Science

The Department of Geography at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Geographic Information Science to begin August 16, 2015. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in geography or a closely related field at the time of appointment. We seek a colleague with expertise in the collection, processing, validation, and analysis of big data to better understand spatio-temporal patterns across topics and geographic scales and to foster trans-disciplinary collaborations. The candidate should have: 1) strong theoretical underpinnings in one or more of the following areas of interest: social media, crowd-sourced data, mobile computing, data content and reliability, cyber infrastructure/security, data mining and analysis, or legal/policy issues, coupled with 2) equally important applications in thematic areas such as disaster response and recovery, public health, environmental patterns and processes, or social/economic/demographic dynamics. With the large volumes of data tied to these fields of study, ideally the candidate will have strengths in computational areas of cyber-infrastructure, high performance computing, GPU computing and/or cloud computing. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong record of publication and extramural funding, research and teaching interests that complement and expand existing departmental strengths, and a demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary groups both on and off campus.

Candidates should provide a letter of application describing current and future research activities and teaching interests/experience, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information (including e-mail addresses) of at least three referees. All materials should be submitted electronically to Dr. Susan Cutter, Search Committee Chair (scutter at sc.edu). Screening of applications will begin September 30, 2014,though applications may be considered until the search is completed.
