Computer Scientist Postdoc Fellow- High Performance Scientific Data
Management and Processing-76206
Organization:CR-Computational Research
Description
The Science Software Systems Group has an immediate opening for a
postdoctoral researcher to conduct applied research in the area of high
performance scientific data management and processing. The overall
objectives for this work are to develop and deploy technologies that
automate data movement and sharing from experiment through processing to
sharing/dissemination. The project will focus on experimental data being
collected at the Advanced Light Source (ALS): moving data to the
National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) across the
Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), assembling automated processing
workflows comprised of a variety of pre-existing and to-be-developed
data analysis, manipulation, and visualization tools; stage data, data
products, and analysis/visualization products for dissemination to
individuals and communities via pre-existing and to-be-developed
web-based technologies.
This position will be part of an experienced team conducting R&D in the
areas of data-intensive, high performance, visualization, analysis, and
data management. The candidate will be working as part of a
multi-disciplinary team composed of computer, computational, and
experimental scientists.
Specific responsibilities:
Design and implementation of a big data scientific workflow system
capable of handling data volumes and complexity of current and
next-generation ALS experiments and simulations. Design and
implementation of a high-performance, large-data, data access and
sharing system for ALS experimental data. Publish and present research
results in journals and conferences.
Required qualifications/skills:
PhD in Computer Science or equivalent/related field, the degree must
have been awarded in the past five years to be eligible for a
postdoctoral researcher position.
Demonstrable research experience in one or more of the following areas:
a) High-performance data management b) Scientific workflow, as
evidenced by original, published work.
Demonstrated ability to design and implement high-quality software on a
time-critical path, in one or more of the following programming
languages and parallel libraries/languages/environments: C/C++, Python,
Java, MPI, pthreads, OpenMP, OpenCL, CUDA, R.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a diverse
team.
Additional desired qualifications/skills:
Software engineering tools: make, cmake, revision control systems (CVS,
SVN, git), gdb.
Exposure to/experience with:
o Web infrastructure software: DJango, NEWT (https://newt.nersc.gov/)
o No-SQL database technologies, including use of as well as design and
implementation: MongoDB
Prior work experience designing and implementing data movement and
management, including use of Globus and Globus Sharing.
Familiarity with scientific data models/formats and I/O libraries: eg. HDF5
Notes
This is a 1-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of
renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continued funding and
research needs. Background checks are required for all hires.
