                           CALL FOR PAPERS:
Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA)
       Special Section Issue on Visual Analytics in Healthcare

           *** Paper Submissions Due May 1st, 2014 ***

Call for Papers:
----------------------
As healthcare organizations continue to embrace new health information
technology (HIT), the amount of data available to clinicians,
administrators, and researchers continues to grow at a rate not seen
before. The vast amount of clinical data often captured for every
patient poses a challenging task for clinicians trying to understand
the patient's condition, for researchers trying to understand the
distinctions between different populations, and for administrators
trying to understand the workflow and performance of an organization.
Interactive data visualization and visual analytics show great
potential as methods to analyze, filter, illustrate, and communicate
many of the diverse data used in clinical practice.

The purpose of this special focus issue is to highlight the most
innovative approaches, techniques, and evaluation studies that employ
data visualization techniques and visual data mining to study complex
clinical datasets. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts as
Research and Applications articles, Review Papers, Brief
Communications, or Case Reports. Emphasis will be given to papers
that include clinical or operational evaluations, and those papers
that quantify the capabilities of the proposed techniques through
impact on fundamental informatics problems. Authors should include
details regarding the informatics aspects of their research, including
the technologies, coding systems (e.g. NDC, CPT), ontologies, or
models that were utilized in the work.

Topics and Scope:
---------------------------
Topics of interests include but are not limited to:

  * Visualization of Public Health Data

  * Visual analysis of patient-generated health data

  * Case studies and applications of visual analytics in healthcare
showing impact on clinical practice

  * Visual analysis and exploration of longitudinal clinical trials data

  * Visual data mining of electronic health records (EHRs)

  * Improving operating room (OR) workflow with visual analytics

  * Visualization of prescription drugs and interactions

  * Outcome forecasting or prediction

  * Visual analytics to improve patient safety

  * Pandemic forecasting and tracking

  * Visual analytics in surgery / radiology / OR / emergency room (ER)

  * Patient engagement or communication

  * Clinical dashboards

  * Data summarization of clinical records

  * Visual data fusion of interdisciplinary clinical data

  * Position papers advocating for specific visual analytics topics in
healthcare

  * Visualization and analysis of biomedical ontologies

  * Improving patient understanding and/or physician-patient
communication with visual analytics

  * Healthcare Business Intelligence

Paper Submission and Format Guidelines:
-------------------------------------------------------------

To ensure consideration in the special issue, authors should note in a
cover letter that their submission is for the "Special Issue on Visual
Analytics in Healthcare". Supplemental materials such as videos,
illustrations, images, and/or additional screenshots are encouraged.
Detailed information for online submission to JAMIA is available via
http://jamia.bmj.com.

All manuscripts will be subject to the rigorous JAMIA peer review
process. After the initial programmatic review, manuscripts considered
within the scope of JAMIA special issue and that meet the quality
expectations will be reviewed by 2-3 experts for scientific merit.

Authors should format and structure their manuscripts according to the
guidelines specified at:
http://jamia.bmj.com/site/about/guidelines.xhtml. Accepted articles
may appear in print or in an online JAMIA issue.

Important Dates:
-------------------------
  - May 1, 2014        Manuscript submission deadline

  - June 30, 2014 (expected) Initial decisions sent to authors

  - July 31, 2014 (expected) Revised manuscript submission deadline
