DIGITAL LITERARY ANNOTATION NEWSLETTER NO. 92 (HALF YEAR 2 2026)

-------------------------

TEASYS – NEWS

As temperatures soar across Europe, and laptops roar in dismay, why
not give yours a rest with a light scroll through our newsletter,
perhaps with a glass of something cool for yourself? The coming months
bring a range of opportunities in the field of digital editing and
annotation. For our part, we are pleased to announce that the
Annotating Literature mentors Marina Kirillova and Ilea Rahn will be
presenting a poster at the conference “Weltliteratur im Medienwandel”,
taking place in Mainz, Germany, from September 15 to 18, 2026 (see the
call for papers here[1]). The conference aims to bring together
discourses on world literature and literature in its media contexts.
The Annotating Literature team will discuss collaborative digital
annotation as an opportunity for teaching comparative literature. Do
come and see Marina and Ilea if you attend!

-------------------------

The Annotated Web Edition Directory[2] is looking forward to your
suggestions. We are always on the look-out for new entries to add to
the list. Feel free to recommend literary digital editions that
include explanatory annotation (of the social or the editorial kind),
web platforms, tools and applications that enable the user to
(collaboratively) annotate texts. Please use the corresponding form on
our webpage. We thank you for your help.

CALLS FOR PAPERS

The Veranstaltung vom Netzwerk junge Digital Humanities
Berlin-Brandenburg, in co-operation with the Netzwerk Digitale
Geisteswissenschaften Potsdam and the DHd Empowerment working group,
is organising an “anti-conference” “SCHEITERN IN DEN DIGITAL
HUMANITIES”, taking place in Berlin on October 2, 2026. The conference
aims to highlight methodological problems and failed approaches in the
Digital Humanities as a productive part of research, providing a space
where uncertainties and difficulties can be openly discussed and
reflected on. The call for proposals[3] of non-traditional
contributions such as lightning talks, mini-workshops, or experimental
formats is open until JULY 12.

Proposals are invited for the workshop “EINSATZ VON KI IN DEN
HISTORISCH ARBEITENDEN GEISTES- UND SOZIALWISSENSCHAFTEN”, taking
place in Regensburg, Germany, from November 5 to 6, 2026 (deadline
JULY 31). The aim of the workshop is for researchers who have already
taken their first steps with generative AI tools in projects within
the historical humanities and social sciences to present their methods
and, where applicable, their (preliminary) results for discussion. See
the full call here[4].

Users and developers of WissKI, a free and open virtual research
environment for managing scholarly data, are invited to submit
proposals of presentations and workshops for the 8. WISSKI
ANWENDER*INNENTREFFEN, taking place in Nuremberg, Germany, from
October 20 to 21, 2026 (deadline AUGUST 31). A preliminary program[5]
is already available online. The full call can be found here[6].

The next DHD ANNUAL CONFERENCE is taking place in Marburg, Germany,
from March 1 to 5, 2027. The conference theme is “Mind the Gap!
Knowledge, Uncertainty, and Responsibility”, with “gaps” – whether
missing metadata, gaps in knowledge, or infrastructural inequalities –
understood not solely as deficits, but also as productive spaces for
interpretation and critique. DHd 2027 invites participants to discuss
these areas of tension together and to develop perspectives on
responsible, reflective, and sustainable digital knowledge production.
The call for proposals[7] of presentations, panels, posters, and
workshops is open until AUGUST 1, 2026.

The 63. JAHRESTAGUNG DES LEIBNIZ-INSTITUTS FüR DEUTSCHE SPRACHE (IDS),
taking place in Mannheim, Germany, from March 9 to 11, 2027 is
accepting proposals for the methods fair until SEPTEMBER 15. The theme
of the conference is “Sprache und Literatur”, with the aim of
exploring phenomena of literary language from the perspective of
linguistic questions and methods. The focus of the methods fair is
practical and centres on resources, methods, and tools, ideally
demonstrated through short application studies. See the full call
here[8].

The call for papers for the hybrid conference “BEYOND BORDERS. FUTURES
OF DIGITISED HISTORICAL MEDIA COLLECTIONS FOR RESEARCH AND TEACHING”,
taking place in Lausanne, Switzerland, from January 28 to 29, 2027, is
open until 30 SEPTEMBER, 2026. The organisers invite submissions of
original research, experimental methods, reusable resources (e.g.
datasets, models, teaching materials) but also critical reflections
and desiderata. Contributions from scholars who do not themselves work
computationally but whose work can constructively critique, inspire,
and inform the further advancement of data-driven approaches to the
study of historical media are explicitly welcomed. See the full call
here[9].

UPCOMING EVENTS

Registration for TEI 2026, the annual conference of the Text Encoding
Initiative, taking place in Vancouver, Canada, from AUGUST 10 TO 14,
2026, is now open here[10]. The conference provides an opportunity for
a diverse and international group of researchers to advance text
encoding practices, demonstrate new tools, pose questions across
disciplines, learn from each other, and train the next generation of
scholars in the principles and practices of text encoding. The full
overview and schedule can be found at the conference website by
following the link above.

The biennial UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD DIGITAL HUMANITIES CONGRESS will
take place from SEPTEMBER 2 TO 3, 2026. The purpose of the congress is
to promote the sharing of knowledge, ideas, and techniques within the
digital humanities. Keynote speakers and the registration link can be
found at the congress website here[11].

The final programme for the TRANSKRIBUS USER CONFERENCE, taking place
in Passau from SEPTEMBER 21 TO 23, 2026, is now available here[12].
This conference explores how cutting-edge AI technology is
transforming our ability to unlock historical documents and preserve
cultural heritage for future generations. This year's theme “Not all
AI is Created Equal” focuses on the race between general-purpose AI
and specialised models for handwritten text recognition, including,
but not limited to, Transkribus.

A three-day hands-on research event co-organised by the IMPRESSO
PROJECT and the BIBLIOTHèQUE NATIONALE DE FRANCE will take place at
the BnF in Paris from OCTOBER 28 TO 30, 2026. This datathon brings
together an international group of researchers curious about the
computational analysis of historical media collections across
languages and modalities. Participants will work in small teams on
self-defined research questions, drawing on BnF's collections and
Impresso resources. See the registration form here[13] for further
details.

RECENT PUBLICATIONS AND RELEASES

PyDistintoX[20], a Python tool which helps researchers to carry out
contrastive analyses of two text corpora, is now available on GitLab.
PyDistintoX is aimed at digital humanists, linguists, literary
scholars, and data analysts who want to quantitatively examine and
visually explore differences between text collections. The tool
calculates 16 statistical distinctiveness measures and makes lexical
differences tangible through heatmaps and further visualisations.

The two-year project eManuSkript[21]  led by Anna Dorofeeva
(University of Göttingen) is finished, and the resulting apps[22] are
now available online. The aim of this collaborative project, funded by
the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre, was to create a suite
of tools suitable for teaching and learning digital palaeography and
codicology as applied to Western Latin manuscripts. The four multi-use
apps come with supporting information packages, as well as a large
searchable bibliography. All code and text is available on GitHub; it
will also be archived in Zenodo and other repositories in the coming
months.
