Liebe Studierenden,

heute Montag den 20.01.2025 findet um 16 Uhr in der Liebermeisterstr. 16 in
HS 4329 Theologicum der Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Karl Auerswald von der TU
München statt.

Das Thema ist:


 

“Floods and droughts – Our Handling of Extremes and the Role of Soils and
Climate Change”

CO2-driven climate change means that rainy and dry periods are getting
longer and there is slightly more precipitation in winter, while summers may
get slightly drier. Soil, as the most important buffer, is therefore even
more important than in the past. However, land use change has severely
impaired this buffer through overbuilding, compaction and drainage. Instead
of making the landscape and land use climate-resistant, they have become
particularly vulnerable to flooding and drought. Flooding and drought are
therefore becoming increasing problems, even though we are only at the very
beginning of climate change. However, land use also offers many
opportunities to counteract this.

 

Prof. Dr. Karl Auerswald

Despite his retirement, he continues to work at the Bavarian State Research
Center for Agriculture and he had a teaching position for "Climate Change
Management" at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences
until 2024. Until his retirement, he taught, among other topics, landscape
hydrology at the Technical University of Munich. He is a soil scientist and
is intensively involved with all facets of water in the landscape. Among
other things, he wrote the book "Flood protection in rural areas", published
by Springer, together with S. Seibert.
