Job Opening – PhD Student (f/m/d) in Visualization & Mixed Reality for
Geological Data Project: VIRTUE – Virtual Underground Laboratory,
University of Leipzig
The Image and Signal Processing Group of the Institute of Computer
Science at Leipzig University seeks a motivated PhD student (f/m/d) in
Computer Science / Visualization / Virtual Reality for the research
project VIRTUE. The project aims to develop a digital toolkit for the
integrated analysis, visualization, and evaluation of geological data in
the context of safe and transparent nuclear waste repository research.
VIRTUE combines methods from Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial
Intelligence (AI), and geoscientific data acquisition to create an
interactive, learning, and transparent information system for
underground laboratories. The work will be carried out in close
cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ)
and the underground laboratory Reiche Zeche of the TU Bergakademie
Freiberg.
Your Tasks
•Development and research of methods for the visualization of large,
heterogeneous geological datasets (e.g., laser scan data, georeferenced
multi-sensor data).
•Design and implementation of VR presentations for interactive analysis
and planning of underground laboratories.
•Integration of scan data, fracture, and displacement information into
Virtual-Reality environments.
•Creation of a digital twin for a representative part of the Reiche
Zeche mine as a demonstrator.
•Development of interaction and interoperability concepts for the visual
representation and analysis of geochemical, geomechanical, and
ventilation-relevant processes in VR.
•Use of interaction data from VR presentations as input for AI-based
analyses.
•Scientific publication of results and preparation of a dissertation in
the field.**
Your Profile
•Completed scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in
Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Engineering,
Geoinformatics, or a related field.
•Very good knowledge in data visualization and VR technologies.
•Experience with Gameengines (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine) and
programming languages (e.g., C#, Python) is an advantage.
•Interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface between
computer science, geosciences, and VR technologies.
•Ability to work independently and enthusiasm for international cooperation.
We Offer
•Participation in an innovative, interdisciplinary research project with
high societal relevance.
•Close cooperation with UFZ, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, and international
partners.
•Access to unique real-world datasets from underground laboratories and
state-of-the-art sensor technology.
•A structured doctoral environment at Leipzig University.
•Funding for 3 years, with secured extension for the entire doctoral
period (approx. 4 years).
