The Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) seeks a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research in virtual reality and visualization for digital twins in advanced manufacturing. Recent advances in materials science and additive manufacturing have allowed us to build previously unfeasible products that are already transforming the transportation, energy, medical, and defense sectors. These objects and their associated manufacturing processes are becoming increasingly complex with highly intricate internal structural details, and defects are often tiny compared to the overall geometry, which can cause problems with structural integrity. Therefore, our project uses digital twins at the part and process level to inspect virtual and physical counterparts. Unlike desktop-based inspection, virtual reality technology provides intuitive viewing and natural interaction with these objects. This research position will develop new VR visualization and interaction techniques, such as occlusion management, real-time synchronous collaboration, interactive multiscale exploration, multimodal analysis and comparison, and 3D focus and context methods to associate defects with events in a process and certify that manufactured parts meet specifications.
Requirements of research activities and directions of interest include but are not limited to:

  * Designing and developing visualization techniques in VR for large-scale volumes and meshes.
  * Graphics programming or experience with game engines
  *   Running user experiments
  *   Interacting with application scientists
  * Ability to work in large teams and excellent communication skills
Candidates will be encouraged to conduct relevant exploratory research and publish results. They will work in an interdisciplinary team of scientists including material scientists, imaging experts, and the visualization and analysis team.
