Interested in doing a PhD in visual data analysis and computer graphics?

Description: The Visual Data Analysis group at Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), Germany, is looking for a PhD candidate for a DFG-funded interdisciplinary project with Egyptologists from the Papyrus collection of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin. Goal of this project is the development of visual data analysis tools for the virtual unfolding of ancient papyrus packages to make the documents readable without physically unfolding them.

Requirements: The project lies at the intersection of several research areas. It involves image analysis, computer graphics and geometry processing. We are therefore looking for a PhD student with a Master’s or Diploma degree in Computer Science or a related field (e.g., information technology, mathematics, computational engineering, etc.) with a specialization in one of the three areas and a strong interest in the other two. An interest in interdisciplinary work and a good command of English is also required.

Work Environment: The Visual Data Analysis group at ZIB offers an excellent research environment. Core values of our interdisciplinary team are good team spirit and knowledge sharing. The Zuse Institute Berlin has strong connections to all three universities in Berlin. Due to the proximity to the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin, PhD students usually enroll at the FU in the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, which awards the Dr. rer. nat. degree.

Position and Application: The anticipated project start date is from September 1st to December 1st 2021. The position is limited for 3 years with the possibility of extension. Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service in Germany (TV-L E13, full-time position). The position holder is eligible for a PhD at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at FU Berlin. Applications from severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration in the case of equal suitability. Qualified female applicants are especially encouraged to apply, as ZIB has a policy to increase the proportion of women. If you are interested in the advertised position, please contact Daniel Baum (baum at zib.de).

The full advertisement can be found here <https://www.zib.de/node/4946>.

Application deadline: August 6th, 2021.

Please forward this announcement to potentially interested candidates.
