We are seeking for a highly motivated PhD candidate and Post-doctoral
scientist in the field of Visual Analytics, Information Visualization,
visual Data Mining and Interaction Design in Centre for Visual Analytics
Science and Technology (CVAST)[3], which is established at the Institute
of Software Technology and Interactive Systems [2], Vienna University of
Technology (TU Wien) [1], Vienna, Austria.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will
- perform interdisciplinary research and develop concepts in the
field of Visual Analytics, Information Visualization, visual Data Mining
and Interaction Design together with leading experts from the Music and
Arts University of The City of Vienna (MUK) within the research project
“Interactive Music Mapping Vienna: Exploring a City, 1945 up to the
present day“ [1]
- design new techniques and implement interactive prototypes
- write scientific publications
- review scientific publications
- participate in applied scientific and consulting projects
- participate in writing research proposals
- work within a creative, highly motivated, and international team
- (to a smaller extent) participate in teaching and supervision of
student projects and theses
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
- University degree in Computer Science, Business
Informatics/Information Systems, or an equivalent university-level
degree that qualifies to enroll as a Ph.D. student
- Strong analytical skills and good skills in programming (preferably
R, Phython, C++, Java, JavaScript, or similar)
- Knowledge or interest in one or more of the following: Visual
Analytics, Information Visualization, Human-Computer Interaction, Data
Mining, Data Quality and Uncertainty
- Abilities to work as an independent and flexible researcher in
interdisciplinary teams
- Good knowledge of German and English in speaking and writing
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
Knowledge or interest in one or more of the following:
- Visual Analytics applied to relational, geospatial, temporal, and
nominal textual data, (dynamic) network analysis and visualization,
visualization of relationship graphs and clusters of actors, events, and
other observations, temporal uncertainty, data quality, interaction and
navigation techniques as well as multiple coordinated views
- (for international applicants) Basic proficiency in German
DATES & DETAILS
- Application deadline: as soon as possible, but not later than
March 3, 2017
- Start date: as early as possible (negotiable)
- Duration: 3 years (extendable)
- Working Hours:
(+) Junior Research Position (30 hours/week extendable) and
(+) Post-Doctoral Researcher (20 hours/week extendable)
- Salary: following the guidelines of the collective agreement (KV)
of the TU Wien. Currently, starting with a gross salary of 2.731,00 per

The project’s focus is the valorisation and the mediation of the
capabilities of music as an urban identification tool. The interaction
between music and urban texture (identity, political symbolism, mental
determination, imagination) should be made accessible to academic and to
a wide audience through interactive Visual Analytic Technologies.
