Tenure-Track Faculty - Visualization
The University of Utah is seeking to hire an outstanding tenure-track faculty member in data visualization at the Assistant Professor level. The position is a joint effort between the Natural History Museum of Utah and the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute, with either the Department of Geography or the School of Computing serving as the tenure home. The appointment would reflect the candidate’s qualifications and interests, and is part of a newly-established, interdisciplinary cluster that brings together domain scientists, visualization researchers, and learning scientists to engage in novel research and outreach related to scientific issues and concepts in biodiversity. For more information, see https://nhmu.utah.edu/sustaining-biodiversity <https://nhmu.utah.edu/sustaining-biodiversity>.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience or demonstrated interest in facilitating knowledge discovery, interpretation, and understanding of data/concepts pertaining to natural/human systems and biodiversity–with an eye toward accessibility by a range of audiences from domain scientists to the general public. Research emphasis might include geovisualization, information visualization, scientific visualization, “big data” analytics, geographic information science (GIS), visual analytics, human-computer interaction, or image cognition for knowledge discovery and interpretation.
Responsibilities include: (1) meaningful collaboration with faculty in the Sustaining Biodiversity cluster as well as faculty at the Museum and in the relevant academic departments; (2) development and maintenance of an ongoing program of scholarly research; (3) design, teaching, and coordination of core undergraduate courses in the relevant academic department; (4) teaching of graduate level courses in area of specialization; (5) advisement and supervision of graduate students; (6) development of research funding proposals to appropriate national agencies and foundations; (7) engagement with Museum public programming; (8) participation in faculty governance at the department, college, and university levels.
Review of applications will begin January 15, 2017, and continue until the position is filled. Apply on-line at https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/58032 <https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/58032> including a CV, research samples, names and email addresses of three references, plus statements of research, teaching, and programmatic interests (i.e., describe how you see your research and academic work potentially impacting and contributing to exhibits and public programs at the Museum, particularly in collaboration with biodiversity scientists; enter this statement into the “Applicant Document—Other” category online). Candidates must have a completed Ph.D. by the time of appointment. Questions may be directed to the Museum’s Executive Director, Sarah George (sgeorge at nhmu.utah.edu <mailto:sgeorge at nhmu.utah.edu>) or the Director of the SCI Institute, Chris Johnson (crj at sci.utah.edu <mailto:crj at sci.utah.edu>).
