Background

The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) develops software, systems, and infrastructure to enable scientific breakthroughs in sciences and technologies of national importance to the UK, including energy, healthcare, environment, security, and urban living.

About the role

The Visualisation Group, with more than a decade track record in visualization software and system engineering, and an ambitious growth plan for the next three years, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced research scientist to commit to the development of user driven software tools for visualisation and image analysis codes supported by the Group.

The Group provides practical software development expertise and knowledge to two major UK based tomographic imaging Collaborative Computational Projects (CCPs) and has a fast growing range of activities in visual analytics where data mining, machine learning techniques are increasingly used to complement visualisation to improve human understandings and perceptions in complex relationship exploration and process optimization.

The Group has built up an extensive portfolio in the development and/or operation of high fidelity visualization facilities. Currently, we mainly operate the Atlas Visualisation Facility (AVF) at the Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire. We have also developed and/or supported the maintenance of visualisation facilities at STFC Daresbury Laboratory and the Innovate UK Satellite Application Catapult.

You will be based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton laboratory in Oxfordshire and the appointment will depend on your qualifications and experience. The work environment will be highly multidisciplinary with a mixed team of software developers, mathematician, image analysis expert, and visualisation expert, experimental and computational scientists from other disciplines.

About you
·         You will have a good degree in science or engineering, e.g. computer science, mathematics, physics, or biology (or with equivalent professional expertise), show proven ability to involve in the delivery of complex software and/or R&D projects and have good experience in modern programming languages, e.g. Python or C++.
·         You will have a good track record in dealing with diverse user groups, from science and/or industry, in software development projects as well as showing experience in implementing complex software or systems, both of which will be essential for a band E appointment.
·         It will be desirable to have a MSc or PhD in computer science, physics, or mathematics, a good knowledge or experience in VTK, paraview, or Avizo and show experience in developing image analysis or visualisation software using Python or C++.
·         Knowledge or experience in data mining or machine learning algorithms, e.g. Bayes classifier, SVM, and tools, e.g. TensorFlow,MLLib, NLTK, R packages (igraph, RWeka etc.) would also be desirable.
