DESCRIPTION
The Media Arts & Technology Program at UC Santa Barbara invites applications at the Associate Professor level for a joint tenured position in Media Arts & Technology and Electrical and Computer Engineering. The position will be available July 1, 2015.

The department seeks exceptional candidates who will establish a vigorous research and teaching program in Physical Computing or related fields that engage embedded sensing systems, distributed or autonomous systems, robotics, mobile/flying devices, immersive, interactive, distributed environments, and high-dimensional data generated in scientific, artistic, and architectural domains. The successful candidate will be expected to actively engage in interdisciplinary research, creative work and teaching in art or architecture and engineering or science.

Media Arts and Technology (MAT) is a trans-disciplinary graduate program situated in both the College of Engineering and the College of Letters and Science (Division of Humanities and Fine Arts). MAT offers Master’s and PhD degrees and has approximately 40 graduate students and 10 faculty members, several with joint appointments in engineering or arts departments. Areas of expertise include human-computer interaction, computer graphics, electronic music and sound design, computational visual and spatial arts, and multimedia signal processing. Offices and labs are housed in the California Nanosystems Institute building at UCSB, which includes a unique research facility called the Allosphere, a three-story spherical immersive environment. Additional information about MAT can be found at http://www.mat.ucsb.edu.

Applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree in Media Arts and Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture or a closely related field, have demonstrated excellence in research, and have a strong commitment to creative activity, teaching and interdisciplinary scholarship to be given serious consideration for this position. Prospective candidates who pursue interdisciplinary research and are committed to the open, experimental prototyping design approach typical in the arts and architecture are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, contact information for three letters of reference, and links to projects and publications. Review of applications will begin on December 20, 2014, and continue until the position is filled.

The program is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
