Collaborative Rover Operations and Planetary Science Analysis in Distributed and Interactive Virtual Environments

European space exploration missions have produced huge data sets of potentially immense value for research as well as for planning and operating future missions. These collected data include a variety of information, such as imagery, topography, atmospheric, geochemical datasets and more, which has resulted in and still demands, databases, versatile visualization tools and data reduction methods. Such rate of valuable data acquisition requires the scientists, researchers and computer scientists to coordinate their storage, processing and relevant tools to enable efficient data analysis. Appropriate tools shall be used during the preparation phases but also during space operations. Exploiting the benefits of advanced immersive virtual environments (IVE) has been recognized as an important interaction paradigm to facilitate future space exploration.

Work packages for the successful candidate will be:

[*] Support in consortium coordination and project quality assurance

[*] Virtual reality architecture and use-case specification and implementation

[*] Real-time terrain rendering and processing

[*] Integration of atmospheric and surface / sub-surface scientific data

[*] Investigation of new scientific visualization methods for intuitive science data exploitation

[*] Development of advanced 3D Mars cartography tools

[*] Collaborative environments and human-computer interface

Desired Qualifications

For this EU-funded project, we are seeking strongly motivated and highly qualified candidates having profound analytical, programming and theoretical skills. Beside the ability to work in a team and good communication skills, it would be advantageous to have experiences in:

[*] developing aerospace applications for interactive virtual environments,

[*] programming for complex and distributed system architectures,

[*] investigating real-time and parallel software algorithms,

[*] visualization of scientific data e.g. with toolkits like VTK,

[*] rendering of large-scale digital elevation models,

[*] computer graphics programming,

[*] integrating interaction methods for human-computer interfaces, and

[*] working on Linux and Windows 64-bit development environments.

Required Qualifications

[*] Qualifying Master’s (or equivalent) in computer science, engineering science, or related discipline

[*] Excellent software programming skills in C/C++

[*] Good knowledge in scientific visualization and GPU programming techniques

[*] Practical experiences with virtual reality (VR) technology

[*] Fluent in spoken and written English (knowledge of German is an asset)

[*] Team worker

The position is open until filled and limited to 3 years. Salary is according to the German salary scale (TVöD) up to E14 (depending on experience). The German Aerospace Center is an equal opportunity employer and explicitly encourages applications from women. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.

Applicants should submit a detailed resume by indicating the reference number
