Application deadline 9th September 2013

We are pleased to announce a 1 Year, Research Masters qualification, vacancy at Bangor University in the School of Computer Science. The research project is titled "Visual analytics of unknown heritage of Gwynedd" and is supervised by Dr. Jonathan C. Roberts in collaboration with the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT) also located in Bangor, UK. The post is funded under the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) scheme, ESF funding and Welsh Government. The student will be located in Bangor, and be a member of the Visualization and Medical Graphics (VMG) group. The group leads the Research Institute for Visual Computing (RIVIC) and organised the Eurographics 2011 conference in Llandudno, UK.

Deadline for applications is 9th September 2013.

This studentship will investigate landscape use and change to locate potential (and yet unknown) sites of interest, by developing visual analytic (VA) techniques that use data from GAT Historic Environment Record (HER). Big-data repositories, such as the HER, provide a rich and currently underutilised) source of data, that relate to sites and landscapes spanning long period of time. They can be used for hypothesis generation and confirmation. The following work is envisaged (i) research uncertainty visualization, viewshed techniques and hierarchical structures, (ii) build a temporal tree of the sites that incorporates terrain data, (iii) calculate probabilities from viewshed analysis, (iv) create an uncertain visualization of the data. Systematic analysis of period-based site types (there are hundreds of different types), will help understand their role and relationship to one another; there is great opportunity to explore patterning not easily recognised by the human eye/traditional analytical techniques. Because this data is huge, manual exploration is impossible and therefore visual techniques that display and highlight uncertainty are required.

The research project spans the disciplines of computing, heritage and archaeology.

The full time 1 year studentship (theses must be submitted a maximum of 3 months after the funded one year study period) includes a tax-free maintenance stipend of £10,130 for 12 months, with full-time fees paid and additional allowances.

The prospective applicant should have a minimum of a 1st or good 2:1 in a Computer Science or similar degree, (i.e., a degree that has substantial computer programming) and have a high level of numeracy, computer programming and initiative and be available to take up the studentship by 1 October 2013.
