VISUALIZATIONS TRANSFORMING THE LIFE SCIENCES

Last week in Cambridge, UK, 28 leading experts
<https://vizbi.org/2026/People> gathered to highlight key visual analytics
challenges in their field, and where new approaches are needed.

This week, you can still take part in VIZBI 2026 <https://vizbi.org/2026>—the
16th International Meeting on Visualizing Biological Data—by joining the
upcoming online sessions, which extend the discussions from last week’s
meeting:

   -

   Virtual Masterclass <https://vizbi.org/2026/Masterclass> (Tuesday, 21
   April <https://vizbi.org/2026/Program#Tue-21>) covers emerging data
   visualization techniques.
   -

Virtual Workshop <https://vizbi.org/2026> (Thursday, 23 April
   <https://vizbi.org/2026/Program#Thu-23>) explores visualizations driving
   life-science breakthroughs.

How does it work? You watch recordings from the in-person event, prepare
questions for speakers, then join one of the 2.5-hour online sessions
(timed to suit any time zone). You’ll engage in small-group discussions
with experts and peers working across computational biology and data
visualization—these discussions aim to create new collaborations, funding
applications, and publications.

Unlock VIZBI videos—new for 2026. Registration now gives you immediate
access to the VIZBI video library <https://vizbi.org/Videos>. Depending on
which events you register for, you’ll unlock all Workshop or Masterclass
videos. Dating back to 2010, the library showcases key advances in data
visualization that are transforming the life sciences. This gives you a
wealth of DataVis insights, methods, and tools you can apply directly to
your own work.

To take part, register at https://vizbi.org/2026/registration

We hope you’ll consider joining us for VIZBI 2026!

The VIZBI organizers:

Dr. Seán O’Donoghue (Visual.Recipes, Australia)
Dr. James Procter (U. Dundee, UK)
Christian Stolte (Visual.Recipes, USA)
Prof. Bara Kozlikova (Masaryk University, Czech Republic)

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE IN-PERSON TALKS

The Masterclass featured Martin Krzywinski
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/00ed2509a7> on the principles of visual design
through the twin-lenses of classicism and romanticism, Seán O’Donoghue and
Christian Stolte on AI assisted development of data visualizations
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/484934e3ab>, and talks on biological storytelling
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/ea074acfc2> and Procedural animation with Blender
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/a5f4839b29> from Vera Williams and Sam Panze.

The Workshop featured 21 talks—here are some of our favorites: Martin
Wattenberg & Fernanda Viegas <https://vizbi.org/Videos/b9762c3a39> on how
AIs understand images and interact with humans, and Jan-Willem Tulp
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/5739199dd4>’s new playbook for provocative and
impactful interactive visualization design.

Pop culture also featured heavily, with Ian Holmes’ talk
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/4d75adaa5f> linking datavis, video games and
house music, and Brady Johnston <https://vizbi.org/Videos/fd8dcbb737>
revealing that molecular visualizations now feature in contemporary social
media.

Hidden gems include Jernej Ule’s work on de-novo gene development from ALU
repeats <https://vizbi.org/Videos/61c873b000>, and Anne Jungblut’s
omics-based investigation of underwater structures
<https://vizbi.org/Videos/5f4d1a1bfc> created by some of the Earth’s oldest
living organisms.

Spatial biology also featured heavily, including talks from Paola Perin on
the neurosensory immune system <https://vizbi.org/Videos/761f32d4a5> of the
cochlea and inner ear. For the full set, see https://vizbi.org/Videos/2026/.
