Dear members of the visualization community,
It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the passing of our fellow community member Matthew O. Ward. He died on Tuesday early morning, peacefully and surrounded by his family. Matt died of cancer.

Matt, a professor at the Computer Science Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, will always be remembered for his pioneering work in high-dimensional data visualization. His publicly available landmark software package XmdvTool just celebrated its 20th anniversary, and it has become widely used in research and industry settings in visualization and many other disciplines. To honor his great achievements, Matt recently received the first VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Software System Award and also a VGTC Certificate of Achievement.

Matt also served on various organizational committees within our community, most recently on the VIS Executive Committee and the InfoVis Steering Committee. His insight and wisdom will be deeply missed.

On behalf of the IEEE CS Technical Committee on Visualization and Computer Graphics (VGTC), I extend my sincere condolences to Matt's family, close friends and colleagues who mourn his passing. He was a great man; he accomplished great things. His contributions to the visualization community -- indeed his legacy - are profound.

Klaus Mueller, VGTC Chair
