BioVis 2012 Data Visualization and Analysis Contest Call for Participation

Overview:

The 2013 BioVis Symposium (co-located with IEEE VisWeek) contest focuses on the domain of protein function, and how protein sequences generate function. In particular, the contest asks whether, from a collection of mutations to a protein, the ones that are important (i.e. that cause the protein's functionality to change) can be segregated from the ones that are unimportant (i.e. that don't appear to affect function), and how this information can be presented in an understandable fashion.

New solutions to this problem are immensely important across the Bio/Life-Sciences, and there are few, if any, domains of visualization that can't make valuable contributions to improving the state of the art.

We welcome entries that range from comprehensive solutions, to those that focus on discrete subproblems.

Entries will be peer reviewed, and accepted entries will be invited to present a demo or podium presentation at BioVis.

Accepted entries will be eligible for invitation to submit full manuscripts to the BioVis Supplement to be published in BMC Bioinformatics.

Available Now:

The contest data consists of the sequence and structure of a functional protein (scTIM), the sequences of many known structural and functional homologs of scTIM, and the sequence of a functionally defective mutant of scTIM (dTIM). The contest challenge is to identify minimal subsets of changes that can rescue functionality in dTIM, and to develop visualization tools that enable the working biologist to evaluate and understand the biological reason and relevance behind these predictions.

The data is available now. It can be accessed through a password-protected contest-discussion forum at:

http://www.biovis.net/year/2013/info/contest-data

The Contest forum is available for discussion between entrants, development of collaborations to approach the problem, or for asking questions to domain experts. Domain experts who created the data and who are intimately familiar with its content, will monitor the forums and answer questions.

If you would like to use this data for a class project, etc, our domain experts are willing to provide additional background and discussion material to aid in motivating and understanding the challenge and biological importance of this topic.

Further information about the contest is available from the BioVis web site:
