CALL FOR ABSTRACTS (CFA)

1st Workshop "Large data analysis in marine science: New Possibilities through Visual Analytics"

A Co-event of the Baltic Sea Science Congress 2013<http://corpi.ku.lt/bssc2013/> (26-30 August 2013, Klaipeda, Lithuania)

We invite contributions to the workshop "Large data analysis in marine science: New Possibilities through Visual Analytics".

This half-a-day workshop aims to bring together the marine sciences and visual analytics point of view. Marine scientists, who deal with data analysis and researcher in visual analytics are highly welcome to attend the workshop. The workshop will include a keynote, presentations, demonstrations of software or prototypes as well as a discussion about the state of the art of visual analytics applied to marine sciences, marine issues, potential visual analytics solutions, current limitations and new interesting approaches.

It is planned to compile the contributions and results of the workshop in a joint contribution to a notable oceanology journal describing the current challenges and needs.

Keynote speaker is Dr.-Ing. Jörn Kohlhammer (to be confirmed),
Jörn Kohlhammer is strongly involved in the Visual Analytics community, Head of Competence Center Information Visualization and Visual Analytics at Fraunhofer IGD and one of the coordinators of the European Coordination Action Project VisMaster.

Workshop date: Coming soon (during the conference, 26-30th August)
Abstract submission deadline: May, 3rd, 2013
Decision of acceptance: May 13th, 2013

Up-to-date information about the workshop is available on the web site:
http://igd-r.de/bssc2013-vaws

Submissions should be made via the workshop e-mail bssc2013-vaws at igd-r.fraunhofer.de<mailto:09bssc2013-vaws at igd-r.fraunhofer.de>

Call for Abstracts

Contributions are welcome from both communities (Marine scientists, who deal with data analysis and researcher in visualization and visual analytics). The workshop will encourage the submission of contributions as abstracts for the following indicative list of topics:

- Current challenges of data analysis in marine sciences (marine biology, oceanography, sea geology, ...)

- Visual Analytics for marine data

- Visual reasoning on marine data sets / Decision making support for sea science

- Interactive exploration and visualization of oceanographic data

- Visual catalogs, search tools and search methods for scientific data sets

- Scientific visualization / Visualization of marine data

- Visualization-assisted verification of simulations / Visualization-assisted model validation

- Visualization of uncertainties, missing data, quality characteristics etc. in marine data sets

- Interactive 3D bathymetry visualization

- Marine coastal GIS, seafloor mapping and habitat mapping

- Interactive web-based visualization of marine data

- Real-time data visualization from monitoring platforms

- Marine data fusion / Marine data portals

The submitted abstracts should summarize the contents of the presentation. The abstracts should represent research contributions, practice and experience, novel applications as well as late breaking, or work in progress results.

Background

The scientific exploration of the sea generates complex and extremely large data sets. Simulation models developed for ocean research areas produces massive data sets too. But the sheer amount, the heterogeneity and complexity of these data become a new challenge. By now a lot of collected ocean research data stays unused because it's too time-consuming and difficult to analyze or explore it. The big challenges of ocean research data arises from their local and global sourcing, spreading over large areas, highly varying scales, the amount and heterogeneity of the data and the varying data quality (uncertainty, different sensor resolutions and measure qualities, uneven distributed measurement points).

The arising need for new powerful analytical and explorative tools in many industrial and scientific domains created a new research discipline called visual analytics - the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Visual analytics aims for an optimization of the skills of the computer to sort, filter and visualize large data sets and the human being with his cognitive abilities. The application of visual analytics could provide new and exciting possibilities as a powerful means to support the work of marine scientists. However, special research is necessary to close the gap between the demands of marine scientists and capabilities of the currently used tools and techniques.
