Müller von der Technischen Universität Berlin statt:<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><i><span lang=EN-GB>The interplay of plants, microorganisms and soil minerals in regulating the fate of soil organic matter</span></i><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><i><span lang=EN-GB>Soil health and multifunctionality depend strongly on the amount and composition of soil organic matter (SOM). Plant-derived organic matter enters soils as litter, roots, or rhizodeposits and is microbially decomposed and transformed into different SOM pools, mainly particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM). During this process, initially plant-dominated inputs are progressively converted into microbial-derived SOM. Because soils are highly heterogeneous across space and time, SOM formation and transformation are likewise variable. The persistence of SOM is largely controlled at nanometer- to micrometer-scale biogeochemical interfaces, particularly in biologically active hotspots such as the rhizosphere and detritusphere. In these zones, interactions among microbes, organic matter, and minerals govern SOM stabilization and long-term carbon storage.
