Dear all,

The Research Seminar in Economics will resume on April 21. The seminar
is run on Tuesdays at 2.15 pm in room E09 in Mohlstraße 36, and you find
the program and paper links under
http://www.wiwi.uni-tuebingen.de/forschung0/research-seminars/research-seminar-in-economics.html

The start will be made by Horst Raff from the University of Kiel. The
title of his talk will be

"Inventory Control and Intermediation in Global Supply Chains".

You find an abstract of his paper below.

The next RSE will take place on May 5 with Thorsten Upmann from the
University of Bielefeld. There will be no RSE on April 28 as will have a
Colloquium with Christoph Schmidt (President of the RWI and chair of the
German Council of Economic Experts) on April 29.

I am looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday afternoon.

Best wishes,
Frank Stähler

Abstract:

The paper develops a simple theoretical model of inventory control in
global supply chains. It identifies a role for intermediaries in
managing inventory, and shows that inserting an intermediary as an
additional link in a supply chain is profitable when demand volatility
is high. It also provides conditions under which the intermediary
handling inventory is located in the exporting versus the importing
country. Trade liberalization in the form of less lumpy trade is shown
to expand the role of export and import intermediaries but to have
potentially negative effects on the volume of international trade and
social welfare in the importing country.
